The Comptroller and Auditor General has had before him your

letter of the 17th Instant, further on the subject of the Salary of local Auditor at Hong Kong.

It is stated that had the Colonial Office been dealing with the question of the Salaries of the Audit Staff, Lord Knutsford would have considered that $4000 per annum was sufficient Salary for Mr Nicolle, having regard to the remuneration of other Officers in the Service of the Hong Kong Government; but, at the same time, the Secretary of State is willing, under the circumstances, to leave the question of increasing the Salary of that Officer to the discretion of the Comptroller and Auditor General.
